Why is Yoga Important?
I'm on a constant quest of self-improvement and well-being. With this comes a seemingly endless search for answers (half the time I don't even know the question being asked), stress relief and serenity.
Yoga is an ancient practice that can help regain balance in our lives. Connecting mind and body through a combination of physical exercise, breathing and meditation, it doesn't take long to realize yoga is a way to exercise the body and mind in tandem.
BODY
Exercise is a key ingredient to living a healthy life. Ask any doctor. Yoga is one my preferred forms of exercise. Through yoga you can increase your mobility and flexibility, improve your cardiovascular system, and get stronger in the process.
Moving from one yoga position to the next, often referred to as flow or flowing, improves your mobility and balance. Flexibility (and physical strength) is gained through the deep stretches and holding of poses. (don't be intimidated by "deep stretch".. depth is personal in yoga and defined by what your body currently is capable of).
Many yoga practices have a focus on breathing as well. This breathwork increases the flow of oxygen through the body, improving the cardiovascular system as a whole.
MIND
When practicing yoga, your body creates and releases endorphins. These endorphins are a natural "feel good" chemical produced in our brain. They decrease stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, and improve mood.
Following a good practice, not necessarily a long or challenging practice but a practice where I've dedicated myself to growth and being present in the practice, I walk away with fewer doubts, worries and a sense of clarity to be able to focus on self care and what is really important in my life at the moment.
Plus, it gives me a chance to simply be. Simply exist. Simply breathe. A good deep breath will help to clear the mind while unwinding and relaxing.
Yoga is so much more than just a fitness discipline to work on your body and look great (although it will do that if you stick with it!). It's a powerful tool to find ourselves, establish a connection with who we are and how we feel from a place of mindfulness and positivity. Having yoga in your life is a little precious reminder to have some me time and to take a break from the daily stress and living on autopilot. Yoga is a guide to self discovery and self awareness for the body, mind and soul.
What are you waiting for? Embark on your yoga journey today and embrace a new way of living!
